This was an incredibly enjoyable conversation--about mathematics, if you can believe it.
Inspired by Paul Lockhart's A Mathematician's Lament, Dr. Matt Mazowita and I sat down to discuss the lost artistry of mathematics. We explored exactly how it is that math is a creative art form, and is in fact the most imaginative of all art forms. We discuss philosophy of education and the challenge of actually educating children rather than simply training them, or worse, running them through rote memorization exercises.
We also worked on the ancient mathematical problem of how to transform a cow into a donut--and I daresay we may have solved it once and for all.
Dr. Matt Mazowita has a PhD in Pure Mathematics from the University of Alberta, and is a frequent public speaker on the topic. He co-founded and helps to run Mystery Science Salon, a monthly lecture series that brings science and math to the people in a fun and accessible setting.
